SCRANTON – The Scranton Prep and Pittston Area girls teams became the first from District 2 to clinch at least ties for first place in their basketball divisions with wins Thursday night.
Rita Collins scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as Scranton Prep handled visiting Scranton, 59-33, in Lackawanna League Division 1.
Scranton Prep has already won five straight titles in the division and 77 straight games in the league.
Maya Jenkins added 13 points and 4 assists while Bella Dennebaum had 8 points and 9 rebounds.
Scranton Prep ran off the last 14 points of the third quarter for a 46-21 lead.
Daniella Ranieli hit four 3-pointers and Ava Callahan made three as Pittston Area defeated Dallas, 44-33, to clinch at least a tie for first in Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1.
The teams were tied just 4-4 after a first quarter in which Ranieli was scoreless.
Ranieli wound up scoring 20 points and Callahan had 11.
Pittston Area is attempting to repeat the title it won in a playoff with Wilkes-Barre Area last season.
Hazleton Area knocked Wilkes-Barre Area out of title contention with a 52-39 victory.
Pittston Area nearly took the title outright, but Wyoming Valley West recovered from a 12-point halftime deficit to defeat Tunkhannock, 56-51, in overtime and keep its mathematical hopes alive.
Abington Heights kept Scranton Prep from ending the race and clinching its sixth straight Lackawanna Division 1 title outright.
The Lady Comets handled Valley View, 61-29.
With Holy Redeemer off for the night, Lake-Lehman forced a tie for the WVC Division 2 lead by routing Wyoming Seminary, 56-25.
Ella Wilson led the way with 19 points. Hailey Kline added 15.
