EDITOR’S NOTE: While NEPASportsNation.com compiles more complete reports, here is a quick recap of Monday’s highlights from the District 2 Girls Tennis Singles Championships.
Abington Heights, Wyoming Seminary and Scranton Prep each advanced two players to Tuesday’s semifinals by winning multiple matches Monday in the District 2 Girls Tennis Singles Championships.
The semifinals will be played Tuesday at 1 p.m. followed by the finals, all at Kirby Park in Wilkes-Barre.
Scranton Prep’s Leelah Farrell was one of three players to defeat a higher-seeded opponent in the quarterfinals to earn a spot in the semifinals.
The top three seeds in Class 2A advanced with three wins each as the field was trimmed from 33 to 4 at Kirby Park.
The top two seeds advanced in Class 3A where 22 players started the day. The four semifinalists each had opening-round byes and needed two wins to advance to Tuesday.
Crestwood’s Hannah Ziegler and Scranton’s Maia Philbin, the fifth and sixth seeds, beat higher-seeded opponents.
They joined top-seeded Susan Arp and second-seeded Rina Hanumali from Abington Heights in the semifinals. Arp will face Ziegler while Hanumali plays Philbin.
Players from Wyoming Seminary and Scranton Prep, the two unbeaten league finalists during the regular season, will square off in the Class 2A semifinals.
Farrell will play top-seeded Ilana Rosenthal while teammate Alyssa Wigley, the second seed, plays Victoria Martinez.
