GREENFIELD TWP. – Wyoming Seminary’s Nick Werner ran off three straight back-nine birdies on his way to a 2-under-par, 70 Monday, leading all players in the District 2 Individual Golf Championships at Elkview Country Club.

Michael Lugiano matched par at 72 to finish second to Werner and lead four players from unbeaten Lake-Lehman among the six state qualifiers in Class 2A boys.

North Pocono junior Gwen Powell won her third district title, finishing first in what was actually a District 2-4 Subregional in Class 3A.

Kevin Wortmann from Wallenpaupack and Miranda Karoscik from Scranton Prep won the other titles.

Werner started on 1, made the turn at even par, then birdied 11, 12 and 13 by making consecutive putts of 10 feet or less.

“Everything seemed to click those few holes,” Werner said.

Lugiano, the 2021 champion, had six birdies, one more than Werner.

Lake-Lehman’s Cael Ropietski was third with a 73, including 33 on the back nine, and Charlie Weidner was fourth with a 77.

Lackawanna Trail’s Gavin June birdied the first hole of a three-way playoff for the last two state spots. Lake-Lehman’s Eli Ropietski went par-par-birdie to take the other spot over Lackawanna League qualifying medalist Eddie Kaufman from Mid Valley.

Powell rallied, recovering from a quintuple-bogey, 9 on 4, to defeat Tunkhannock’s Hallie Brown in Class 3A girls.

The junior played the last seven holes in 3-under for a 75 to win by three strokes over Brown, who won her title last season when the Lady Tigers played in Class 2A.

Honesdale’s Kayla Benson was the third qualifier with an 81.

Wortmann won the Class 3A boys title with a 74.

Crestwood’s Derek Johnson and Owen Blazick were second and third with 75 and 77.

A three-way playoff was needed for the fourth and final state spot. Valley View’s L.V. Pegula birdied 1 to defeat teammate Zach Smith and Hazleton Area’s Connor Matteo. All three shot 79.

Scranton Prep’s Miranda Karoscik opened with an eagle and shot 88 to win Class 2A girls by one stroke over teammate Gianna Cafarella.

Holy Redeemer’s Arden Brunn shot 92 and prevented Scranton Prep from taking all three spots by beating Chloe Lynch in a playoff.

Karoscik and Powell shot 75 and 76 at Elmhurst Country Club last week while leading Scranton Prep and North Pocono to District 2 girls team titles.
