Cavaliers capture another golf title

Scranton Prep locked up its seventh straight Lackawanna League divisional golf title and did it with a perfect record for the sixth time in that streak.

The Cavaliers swept the first two foursomes on Senior Day at Glenmaura National on the way to an 8-1, Lackawanna Class 2A Division victory over Blue Ridge that extended the team’s unbeaten streak to 97 matches.

Scranton Prep is 94-0-3 during the streak with two ties during the 2020 Division 1 championship season and one in 2015, the year the streak started.

Ben Walsh and Gavin Walsh won three points in the first group.

Guy Rothery won his singles point in the minimum five holes and combined with T.J. Stott to take the three points in the second group.

Dan Flynn won in singles and teamed with Joey Toczydlowski to complete Scranton Prep’s sweep of the better-ball points.

The Cavaliers, who had earlier clinched at least a first-place tie in the division, earned the top seed for the league’s playoff to determine its participant in the District 2 Class 2A championship match. Scranton Prep, the 2020 Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association state Class 2A champion, will also be seeking its seventh straight district title.

Scranton Prep opens the playoffs at home against Western Wayne Wednesday at 3:30 at Glenmaura. If the Cavaliers win, they will host the Holy Cross-Montrose winner Saturday at 3:30.
