Champs remain 1-2; Cougars climb

Abington Heights and Dallas protected the top two spots in the Riverfront Sports Elite Eight Boys Tennis Power Rankings of District 2 teams.

After adding District 2 Class 3A and 2A titles to their Lackawanna League and Wyoming Valley Conference championships, the unbeaten Comets and Mountaineers held down first and second when the new rankings were released Sunday morning. Abington Heights and Dallas have been first and second in all seven sets of weekly rankings this season.

The only change from the completion of district team competition was Valley View trading place with Scranton Prep by moving up one spot from sixth to fifth. The Cougars advanced to the District 2 Class 3A championship match and had Luke Kotcho win the district singles title.

The rankings will be updated one more time – after Abington Heights and Dallas have completed play in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association state team tournament, which begins Thursday.

Holy Cross, the Lackawanna and District 2 Class 2A runner-up, remained in third, followed by Wyoming Area, the WVC runner-up that it beat in the district semifinals.

Delaware Valley and Wyoming Seminary are seventh and eighth.
