CLASS 4A GIRLS SOCCER RECAP: Valley West claims subregional

Elise Ginocchetti and Veronica Warunek scored goals Saturday to lift Wyoming Valley West over host Delaware Valley, 2-1, for the District 2-4 Class 4A Subregional girls soccer title.

The win advanced the Lady Spartans (13-7) into state tournament play where they will host District 1 third-place finisher Conestoga (18-2-2) Tuesday at 6 p.m. in a Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association first-round game.

Delaware Valley 5, Hazleton Area 1

Top-seeded Delaware Valley began its postseason with the home-field victory Thursday.

Wyoming Valley West 3, Willamsport 2

Lola Wojciechowski scored consecutive unassisted goals to break a scoreless tie in the second half of host Wyoming Valley West’s Thursday victory over the District 4 opponent.

The Lady Spartans scored the first three goals before Williamsport rallied late.

QUARTERFINALS

Hazleton Area 1, Wilkes-Barre Area 0

Reese Kaschak scored the game’s only goal from about 10 yards out when the Wilkes-Barre Area defense was unable to control a loose ball during Tuesday’s game.

Williamsport 5, Scranton 0

Elizabeth Shultz scored two second-half goals to Williamsport to the win Tuesday.
