Collins, Dallas lead District 2’s Class 2A girls at state swimming

Wyoming Seminary’s Ryleigh Collins turned in District 2’s top two individual performances while Dallas managed both the top team and relay finishes during the Class 2A girls portion of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Championships Friday and Saturday at Bucknell University.

Collins placed second in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:52.89, finishing less than a second behind Lewisburg’s Kimberly Shannon. The junior was also third in the 100 butterfly, part of a fifth-place 200 medley relay team and the anchor on the eighth-place 400 freestyle relay.

The top relay finish was turned in by the Dallas combination of Gabby Spaciano, Gina Kerrick, Peyton Stauffer and Lydia Gonzales while placing third in the 200 freestyle in 1:38.59.

The 200 freestyle relay performance led Dallas to a sixth-place finish in the team standings just in front of seventh-place Wyoming Seminary, 108½-107.

Schuylkill Valley beat out Mount Pleasant for the team title, 177-169.

District 2 had four teams in the top 20. Scranton Prep finished 12th and Valley View was tied for 19th.

The eight finalists in each event earned state medals. The ninth- through 16th-place swimmers after qualifying heats made the finals and scored points for their teams.

Alyssa Kelly joined Wyoming Seminary teammate Collins as the district’s two four-event state medalists.
