Comets claim Lackawanna volleyball championship

Abington Heights had its perfect Lackawanna League boys volleyball record ruined by North Pocono Tuesday.

The Comets made sure not to let their championship hopes get away Thursday.

Playing at second-place Blue Ridge on the final night of the regular season, the Comets swept the host Raiders, who were in position to force a tie for first and a playoff for the title.

Harry Johnson had 10 kills and 5 aces to lead the way in the 25-16, 25-11, 27-25 sweep.

Blue Ridge extended the last set when it forced a 25-25 tie.

Jamison Bessoir won a battle at the net, scoring the go-ahead kill for Abington Heights.

A block by Nate Steenback then gave Abington Heights the two-point advantage it needed to end the match and secure the title.

Steenback finished with nine kills and four aces.

Conor Cranage had 10 kills, 6 digs and 3 blocks for Blue Ridge.

Connor Gallagher had 20 assists and Garrett Conklin 19 digs for the Raiders.

Calvin Scheideler, who had five digs, and Gerald Welsted had four kills each.

Abington Heights finished 11-1 in the league and 11-3 overall. Blue Ridge is 9-3 while playing strictly a Lackawanna schedule.
