Comets suffer first basketball loss

Ryan Koch scored 19 points Saturday afternoon to lead the way as Berks Catholic defeated host Abington Heights, 62-52, in a non-league meeting of boys basketball unbeatens.

Koch made four 3-pointers, including three in the first half.

Jaxson Geddio added 18 points as Berks Catholic improved to 11-0.

Abington Heights, playing less than 16 hours after finishing up a Friday night league win over rival Scranton Prep, fell to 9-1.

Mason Fedor scored 14 points and Will Marion added 13 for the Comets.

Berks Catholic led 12-11 after one quarter, then scored the first eight points of the second quarter.

Koch had two 3-pointers early in the second and Berks Catholic was still ahead 23-15 before Marion and Ryan Nealon each hit 3-pointers in a 10-0 streak to put Abington Heights in front.

Berks Catholic came right back with an 8-3 run to close the half with a 31-28 lead.

The Saints outscored the Comets, 20-7, in the third quarter for a 51-35 lead.

Freshman Jordan Shaffer made three straight 3-point attempts in the first 3:26 of the fourth quarter to pull the Comets as close as 53-46.

Abington Heights is back on the court Tuesday night at home for a 7:35 game against Valley View with first place in Lackawanna League Division 1 on the line. Both teams are 2-0 in the division while sharing District 2’s best overall boys record at 9-1.
