Comets, Warriors, Lions rolling

Abington Heights and Delaware Valley kept winning to set up a this week’s match to decide the Lackawanna League Division 1 title.

Lackawanna Trail’s winning ways continued with the Lions securing their fourth straight Lackawanna League Division 2 championship.

The Comets, Warriors and Lions remained 1-2-3 in the latest Riverfront Sports Elite Eight Wrestling Power Rankings of District 2 teams.

They were part of the top six remaining intact in the latest rankings, which were released Friday afternoon.

This week’s only change is Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 leader Berwick overtaking Pittston Area into seventh place, trading places with the Patriots, who are now eighth.

Honesdale, Wallenpaupack and Wyoming Valley West held fourth, fifth and sixth and Berwick moved into seventh despite each losing once.

Abington Heights defeated Wallenpaupack, 39-30, to improve to 14-0 in duals after finishing 16th out of 53 teams in Escape the Rock, a tournament in Council Rock.

Delaware Valley heads to Abington Heights Wednesday for the Lackawanna Division 1 finale. The Warriors are tied with the Comets at 3-0 in the division and are 9-1 overall after winning twice. Delaware Valley also placed 30th at Escape the Rock during the week.

Lackawanna Trail edged Honesdale, 30-27, in a No. 3-vs.-4 battle for the Division 2 title, running its league winning streak to 25 matches in a little more than four years. The Lions, who were second twice and third once in tournaments earlier this season, finished at least 100 points ahead of each of the other 17 teams while winning the Dan Wickham Classic in Unatego, N.Y.

No. 5 Wallenpaupack won seven times to finish first in the two-day Cavalier Duals at Archbishop Spalding in Maryland. The Buckhorns then lost at home to top-ranked Abington Heights.

Wyoming Valley West, the No. 6 team, had a 5-1 week. The Spartans won their only WVC Division 1 match and went 4-1 at the Berwick Duals.

One of the Wyoming Valley West wins was to hand Berwick its only loss while hosting the dual-meet event. The Bulldogs also picked up a WVC Division 2 win over Tunkhannock.

Pittston Area defeated Dallas in a WVC Division 1 match, but went 0-5 at the Central Dauphin Duals.
