Crestwood locks up top ranking

The football season for District 2 is down to one team.

And that team, Crestwood, has secured the final Big School No. 1 spot in the Gaughan Auto Store Super Six Power Rankings compiled by our partners at NEPAFootball.com.

Crestwood continues its state title pursuit into the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Class 4A quarterfinals with a game Saturday 1 p.m. game at the Northeast Supersite in Philadelphia against Archbishop Bonner-Prendergast.

Regardless of the outcome, the rankings are final for the season.

Crestwood held No. 1 in a fitting final rankings battle, beating No. 2 Valley View, 12-7, with the help of a defensive stand in its own end with four minutes remaining in Friday’s home-field victory for the District 2 Class 4A championship.

The other four District 2 teams that played into last weekend all lost in first-round PIAA games, ending their seasons.

Lakeland finished as the No. 1 Small School.

There were no changes from the previous week’s rankings.

Crestwood is still followed by Valley View, then Delaware Valley, Dallas, Hazleton Area and Scranton in the final Big School rankings.

In addition to the District 2 title and state quarterfinal berth, Crestwood is the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 champion.

Valley View won the Lackawanna Football Conference Division 1 title.

Delaware Valley won District 2 Class 5A.

Lakeland is followed, in order, by Scranton Prep, Western Wayne, Dunmore, Lackawanna Trail and Old Forge.

The top-ranked Chiefs won both District 2 Class 2A and LFC 2 championships. They had the district’s only unbeaten regular season.

Scranton Prep won District 2 Class 3A and Lackawanna Trail won Class A.

Old Forge was the LFC Division 3 champion.
