Crestwood, WA take golf openers

Crestwood did not need long to establish itself as a serious contender in Wyoming Valley Conference Class 3A Division boys golf.

The Comets went to Dallas’ home course at Irem Temple Country Club and posted a 162-175 victory over the Mountaineers, living up the expectations for Crestwood in the preseason Riverfront Sports Super Six Golf Power Rankings of District 2 teams.

Owen Blazick and Derek Johnson each shot 2-over-par, 38 to lead Crestwood to the victory. The Comets opened the season as the No. 2 Big School in the rankings while Dallas, last season’s final No. 1, began in the No. 4 spot.

Dallas finished sixth in the state in Class 3A at last year’s Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Team Championships, but suffered heavy graduation losses.

Charlie Letwinski shot 41 and Rhys Bonvie, a returning starter from the district championship team, added a 42 for Dallas.

Tommy Biscotti shot a 40 for Crestwood.

The fourth Comets score came from three players – Ray Joseph, Luke Joseph and Luka Wiegopolski – each shooting 46s.

Bradley Kuegler shot 45 and Ryan Vallach had a 47 for Dallas.

The WVC realigned from three divisions to two this season, with all the Class 3A teams being combined into one division.

Wyoming Area made the jump from Class 2A to 3A and therefore went from Division 3 of the three-division format to the top division of two.

The Warriors made a successful debut in Class 3A when Jack Mulhern, Kristian Pugliese and Matt Rusinchak all shot 43s in a 174-226 romp over Wyoming Valley West in another match at Irem Temple.
