D-I basketball: Planutis, Rose post double-doubles in Saturday wins

Saturday’s National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I basketball schedule saw seven District 2 graduates playing.

Here is a recap of how each did:

BOBBY PLANUTIS, PURDUE FORT WAYNE MEN

6-foot-8 graduate student forward from Hazleton Area

Saturday’s result

Purdue Fort Wayne (5-4 overall, 1-1 Horizon) defeated visiting Oakland (2-8 overall, 0-2 Horizon), 79-73, in overtime

Individual statistics

Started, played 40 minutes; 7/12 FG, 5/9 on 3-pointers, 1/2 FT, 20 points; 2 offensive, 8 defensive, 10 total rebounds; 1 assist; 1 turnover.

Notes

Planutis and teammate Ra Kpedi each had a double-double to lead Purdue Fort Wayne to its first Horizon League win. … Purdue Fort Wayne led for a majority of the game, but a late run by Oakland, highlighted by a 3-pointer by Jalen Moore with 11 seconds remaining, tied the score and sent the game to overtime. … Purdue Fort Wayne started the overtime session on a 7-0 run to seal the victory. … Planutis scored 4 of the Mastodons 8 points in the extra session.

ETHAN MEUSER, STONEHILL COLLEGE MEN

Saturday’s result

Stonehill (4-6) defeated host Binghamton University (3-5), 69-66

Came off the bench, played 4 minutes; 1/1 FG, 2 points; 1 offensive, 1 defensive, 2 total rebounds.

Notes

Binghamton senior Jacob Falko converted a layup with 4.8 seconds remaining to tie the game, 66-66. The Skyhawks quickly inbounded the ball and Josh Mack made a 3-pointer as time expired to give Stonehill the win. It was the fifth-year guard’s second buzzer-beating game winner over the last two weeks. … Meuser saw limited time due to foul trouble. He committed four fouls in his four minutes.

GEORGE TINSLEY, MOUNT ST. MARY’S MEN

Mount St. Mary’s (4-5 overall, 1-1 MAAC) lost to visiting Rider (3-4 overall, 1-0 MAAC), 68-65

The game was tight throughout and featured 12 lead changes and 8 ties with the biggest lead by either team being 7 points. … Mount St. Mary’s led, 49-47, with 13:15 remaining. Riders defense held the Mountaineers off the scoreboard over the next seven minutes during a 9-0 run.

New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) (1-7) lost to visiting Bucknell (6-3), 79-63.

Notes

Bucknell shot 52.5 percent from the field, including 43.5 percent from 3-point range. … Bucknell’s defense held the Highlanders to 32.8 percent shooting and 23.1 percent from behind the arc. … NJIT scored the first four points of the game, but Bucknell answered with eight straight points and led for the final 35:15 of the contest.

Bucknell (4-5) defeated visiting Stony Brook (4-4), 64-58

Bucknell used a strong second-half defense to secure the victory and win its second straight game. … Both teams started the game strong in a fast-paced first quarter that ended with the Bison leading, 20-19. Bucknell seized the lead on a Collins 3-pointer and led the remainder of the quarter. … Collins scored 7 points in the quarter to pace Bucknell. … Collins picked up two fouls within the first three minutes of the second quarter and sat the remainder of the half. Stony Brook took advantage of her absence to go on a quick run and grab the halftime lead.

RACHAEL ROSE, WOFFORD COLLEGE WOMEN

5-foot-7 sophomore guard from Scranton Prep

Wofford (6-2) defeated visiting Appalachian State (2-5), 71-42.

Notes

Rose’s double-double is her first as a Terrier and the first by any Terrier this season. It was the fourth double-double of her career. … Rose’s 13 rebounds are a career-high. …Wofford opened the game on a 15-0 run and never looked back. … The win is Wofford’s sixth in a row, tying the program’s Division I record. The Terriers also extended their home winning streak to six dating back to last season.
