D-I BASKETBALL: Toomey perfect from floor while Rose comes close

Saturday’s National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I basketball schedule saw the teams of six District 2 graduates playing.

Here is a recap of how each did:

VICTORIA TOOMEY, RIDER UNIVERSITY WOMEN

6-foot-2 senior center from Dunmore

Saturday’s result

Rider (4-9 overall, 1-3 MAAC) won at Saint Peter’s (0-12 overall, 0-3 MAAC), 87-52

Individual statistics

Started, played 19 minutes; 6/6 FG, 12 points; 1 offensive, 3 defensive, 4 total rebounds; 4 assists; 2 blocks; 1 steal.

Notes

All five starters scored in double figures for Rider. … The Broncos closed out the first quarter scoring eight straight points, then opened the second with another 15 consecutive points to lead, 31-11. Rider was 10-for-12 from the field during the run, including 3-for-3 from behind the arc. … A layup by Toomey midway through the fourth quarter put Rider up 82-35, its largest lead of the game.

RACHAEL ROSE, WOFFORD COLLEGE WOMEN

5-foot-7 sophomore guard from Scranton Prep

Wofford (10-4) defeated visiting Erskine (2-7 overall), 78-48.

Started, played 21 minutes; 6/7 FG, 6/7 FT, 18 points; 3 defensive rebounds; 4 assists; 1 turnover; 5 steals.

Wofford used a massive 26-point run in the second half to pull away from Erskine. … The Terriers led, 37-35 with 6:53 remaining in the third quarter but held Erskine scoreless for the remainder of the quarter and nearly two minutes of the fourth quarter while scoring the 26 unanswered points. Rose contributed 10 points during the run. … Wofford concludes non-conference play with a perfect 6-0 record at home. … The 10 non-conference wins match the most for the Terriers in program history set in 2016-17.

BOBBY PLANUTIS, PURDUE FORT WAYNE MEN

Purdue Fort Wayne (10-5 overall, 2-2 Horizon League) defeated host Youngstown State (10-5 overall, 2-2 Horizon League), 76-71

Purdue Fort Wayne led for nearly 34 minutes of the game. … The game featured an exchange of runs. Youngstown State scored 13 straight points to lead, 61-53 with 8:30 remaining. It was its first lead since 9-8. The Mastodons followed with a 15-2 run. … Purdue Fort Wayne shot 53.6 percent (30-of-56) including 48 percent (12-of-25) from three-point range.

Niagara took control of the first half, outscoring Mount St. Mary’s, 36-27, behind a strong performance from three-point range. The Purple Eagles made their first four three-point attempts to grab an early 14-7 lead. … Niagara finished the first half making 7 of 12 from behind the arc (58.3 percent). … Tinsley scored six points and had three rebounds in the first half. … Due to continuing blizzard clean-up efforts around Canisius’ campus, Monday’s game has been moved to Niagara University.
