Dallas and Abington Heights added to their District 2 boys tennis team championships by each producing the champions of the district doubles tournament, which was completed Monday at Kirby Park in Wilkes-Barre.
In both cases, the top two singles players combined for form championship doubles teams before going back to their regular roles for the start of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association state team tournament Tuesday.
Tucker Chesman-Dan Flynn from Dallas and Sam Weis-Sam Christman from Abington Heights claimed the doubles gold medals and a berth in that state tournament, which will be conducted after the team season is complete.
Chesman-Flynn defeated Scranton Prep’s Matt Tressler-Ethan Borick, 6-3, 6-1, in the Class 2A championship match.
Dallas and Scranton Prep were the unbeaten champions of the Wyoming Valley Conference and Lackawanna League respectively before meeting in the district team final.
Chesman-Flynn repeated that win, completing a tournament in which they lost just 11 games in 8 sets, dating back to Saturday’s first two rounds, also at Kirby Park.
The tournament resumed Monday with the semifinals where Chesman-Flynn defeated Wyoming Seminary’s Keefer Wu-Vaughn Kutish, 6-4, 6-0.
Tressler-Borick advanced to the final with a win over the other Dallas entry, Dan Dudick-Jason Joshi, 6-4, 6-2.
Weis-Christman defeated Wilkes-Barre Area’s Michael Hamel-Stanley Shimko, 6-3, 6-3, in the Class 3A final after getting past Wallenpaupack’s Jack Filip-Peter MacDonough, 6-0, 6-2, in Monday’s first match.
Hamel-Shimko made the final with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over West Scranton’s John Sinclair-Sawyer McHale.
The first three rounds of the Class 3A tournament were conducted Saturday at the North Pocono Middle School.
