BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK

(Presented by Center City Print)

SAM BARROUK, Dallas junior pitcher/first baseman

Time period: June 5-11

Game Two: Barrouk worked all but one out of Thursday’s 6-0 Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Class 4A state quarterfinal victory over Hanover. He allowed just three hits and two walks while striking out eight in the combined shutout.

Season batting: Barrouk’s only hit in limited times in the lineup is a home run. He is 1-for-6 on the season.

Season pitching: Barrouk has a 1.08 earned run average, by far the best on the District 2 championship team, in 13 appearances. He has struck out 62 in 52 innings while allowing 33 hits and 16 walks.

About Sam: Barrouk has been used strictly as a pitcher in his last seven appearances, over a span of seven weeks, but he has been outstanding in that time, allowing only one earned run in 40 2/3 innings. Barrouk has an 0.38 playoff ERA, including a one-hit shutout in an 11-0 win over Honesdale in the district title game. He also held Tunkhannock to a run on two hits in five innings during an 11-1 win in the quarterfinals.

About the Mountaineers: Dallas, which won a state title in 2017, is back in the Class 4A state semifinals in the first year under coach Mike Viglone. The Mountaineers (17-7) have won seven of their last eight games after a late-season, four-game losing streak. They were 8-6 to finish fourth out of eight teams in Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1, trailing three Class 6A and 5A teams.
