Giuliana Mazza scored 17 points and Holy Cross held host Blue Ridge without a field goal for a stretch of 11:56 Tuesday night on the way to a 37-25 victory in the District 2 Class 2A girls basketball quarterfinals.
Jenna Luciani scored 10 points and Abby Thompson added 9 in the victory.
Mazza, Luciani and Thompson each made two 3-pointers.
Holy Cross (5-18) has gone 4-6 since starting 1-12. The Lady Crusaders advance to play at top-seeded Montrose Friday night in the semifinals. The Lady Meteors (18-4) had a quarterfinal bye.
Blue Ridge held Holy Cross scoreless for the first 4:48 and had leads of 4-0 and 6-2 in the first quarter.
The Lady Raiders were ahead, 6-5, after one quarter and only trailed 14-13 at halftime.
Libby Zick’s layup with 2:18 left in the second quarter lifted Blue Ridge into a 13-13 tie, but it was the last basket by the Raiders until Emma Button hit a 3-pointer with 6:22 remaining in the game.
Holy Cross held Blue Ridge scoreless for 1:00 while scoring 14 straight points for a 27-13 lead.
Button broke that drought by hitting the second of two free throws, but the Lady Crusaders scored the first five points of the fourth quarter for a 32-14 lead.
As the fifth seed in the six-team tournament, playing fourth-seeded Blue Ridge, Holy Cross was the only road team to win in the five girls games played on the first night of the District 2 playoffs.
The Lady Raiders finished 8-15.
