Del Valley jumps with tourney title

Delaware Valley used the championship of the Lackawanna League Wrestling Tournament to jump three places in this week’s Riverfront Sports Elite Eight Wrestling Power Rankings of District 2 teams.

The Warriors moved into second place when the new rankings were released Saturday morning.

The rankings take into account team strength in both dual meet competition and tournament scoring for individual events.

Delaware Valley trails only Abington Heights, which finished second to the Warriors at the league tournament.

The Comets, the defending Lackawanna League Division 1 and District 2 Class 3A champions, are 7-0 in duals with a tournament title in that format. They opened their division title defense during the week with a 47-24 victory over Scranton.

Delaware Valley went from fifth to second in the week’s only change.

The teams that make up the Elite Eight went 7-1 in duals – 6-0 when not facing each other – and filled the top six places in the standings at the Lackawanna League Tournament.

Lackawanna Trail, Honesdale and Wallenpaupack each dropped one place to third, fourth and fifth in the rankings, matching their finish at the league tournament.

Wallenpaupack improved the district’s best record to 8-0 with a 39-32 league win over West Scranton, which remains in sixth.

Wyoming Valley Conference members Pittston Area and Wyoming Valley West, who meet Jan. 4 in what could be the most important match of the year in Division 1, held on to seventh and eighth.

Wyoming Valley West was the only team to win two duals during the week.
