The finalization of the District 2 football pairings went past 10 p.m. Saturday when Susquehanna defeated Holy Redeemer, 39-26, to move from the fourth to the third spot for the Class 2A semifinals.
Scranton Prep took over the lead in a tight ratings race in Class 3A Friday night when it won a battle of unbeatens with Class 4A top seed Valley View, 17-10.
The pairings are now official for the four District 2 football playoff brackets and the two subregionals that include District 2 teams. All of the first-round games are being played Friday night at 7.
Delaware Valley, in Class 6A, and Lackawanna Trail, in Class 2A, join Valley View and Scranton Prep as the four top seeds from the Lackawanna Football Conference.
Wyoming Valley West and unbeaten Old Forge have been declared District 2 champions in Class 5A and A.
Wyoming Valley West qualified and Abington Heights, the other District 2 team in the class, did not for the District 1-11 Class 5A Subregional semifinals.
OId Forge wins District 2 Class A after Holy Cross, which lost to the Blue Devils, 55-6, chose not to participate in the district championship game. Old Forge has the first week of the playoffs off and awaits the District 1 champion, either Belmont Charter or Bristol, in what is technically a District 1-2 Class A Subregional. The Blue Devils would have been the top seed and had earned the home field if a District 2 game was played.
District 2 has four teams in Class 6A and 2A with all qualifying for the playoffs.
The top 7 teams out of 10 in Class 3A are part of a bracket in which Scranton Prep receives a first-round bye after the eighth and ninth teams, Nanticoke and Hanover Area chose not to participate.
District 2’s largest tournament field is in Class 4A with a full eight-team bracket out of 11 member schools.
