Here are some of the day’s highlights:
MAIN EVENT
A.J. Kucharski won four events Tuesday as Valley View defeated Scranton, 102-48, to clinch at least a tie for first place in the Lackawanna Track Conference Division 1 boys standings.
Valley View and Scranton shared the division title three ways with Abington Heights last season. The Cougars entered the day a half-meet behind the Knights in the meeting between the division’s only two unbeatens.
Kucharski posted career-bests while winning the long jump with 20-10 and the 300-meter hurdles in 41.4 seconds. He also won the 110 high hurdles in 16.57 and ran the third leg of the 1600 relay team that won in 3:42.24.
Sprinter Connor Hilling won the 100 and 200 dashes and anchored the win in the 400 relay.
Valley View won 15 of the 18 events, including all 3 relays.
The Cougars improved to 3-0 and can take the title outright with a win at Scranton Prep (1-2) in the division finale.
Scranton finished the division 3-1.
ALSO CLINCHING
Wallenpaupack defeated Honesdale, 93-56, to clinch at least a first-place tie in LTC Division 2 girls track and field.
The Lady Buckhorns are 3-0 with only a meet remaining against winless Western Wayne.
North Pocono and Delaware Valley are tied for second at 2-1.
TOP PERFORMERS
Alex Aiello, Wyoming Seminary baseball – Aiello threw a four-hitter and went 2-for-3 with a run scored in a 6-2, Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 victory at Wyoming Area. He worked through trouble to allow just one earned run despite walking six.
Maddie Olshemski, Wyoming Seminary girls lacrosse – Olshemski scored six goals and assisted on two when Wyoming Seminary defeated Pittston Area, 20-6, in a WVC game.
Sophia Sabatini, Wyoming Area girls lacrosse – Sabatini scored eight goals, assisted on one, handled seven groundballs and was 20-for-29 controlling draws as Wyoming Area defeated North Pocono, 20-9, in a WVC game.
Gabby Wood, Tunkhannock softball – Gabby Wood went 3-for-3 with two doubles, a home run, six RBI and three runs scored in a 16-1, four-inning victory over Crestwood in WVC Division 1.
Madison Zalewski, Abington Heights girls track and field – Zalewski threw the javelin 116-11 to set a school record and also won the high jump during a 100-50, non-league romp over North Pocono.
KEY CONTRIBUTORS
Jackson Matash, Berwick boys volleyball – Matash had 32 assists, 8 service points, 2 aces, 4 digs and a kill in a 25-18, 25-17, 25-12 sweep of Berwick’s WVC match with Crestwood.
Ella McNeff, Tunkhannock softball – McNeff went 4-for-4, scored four runs and drove in another in Tunkhannock’s rout.
Halle Kranson, Wyoming Area girls lacrosse – Kranson assisted five goals along with scoring two and handling eight groundballs against North Pocono.
TOP DEVELOPMENTS
Crestwood handed Hazleton Area its first loss, 87-63, helping create a four-way tie at 3-1 in WVC Division 1 boys track and field. Dallas moved into the first-place tie by beating Crestwood, 85-56.
Trinity Basara won the 200 and 400 and ran on the winning 1600 relay team as Dallas routed Pittston Area, 107-43, to take over sole possession of the WVC Division 1 girls track and field lead. Dallas took advantage of the Crestwood girls also ruining Hazleton Area’s unbeaten record, 87½-62½.
Delaware Valley, the only unbeaten in WVC boys volleyball, easily handled Holy Redeemer, sweeping the Royals, one of three conference teams to begin the day with one loss. The Warriors swept the Royals, 25-12, 25-15, 25-16.
QUICK HITS
Jake Vigorito and Brady Fallon had three hits each as Hanover Area handed Holy Redeemer its first WVC Division 2 baseball loss, 7-6. District 2’s last unbeaten baseball team at 9-0, Holy Redeemer has lost three straight in a span of four days with the first two coming outside the division. The Royals still lead Lake-Lehman by a game and Nanticoke by 1½.
Michael Pirner, Jack Farrell, Jack Sorensen and Colin Donahoe won the closing 1600 relay as visiting Abington Heights knocked off LTC Division 2 boys co-leader North Pocono, 76-74, handing the Trojans their first loss of the season.
Crestwood had 10 different goal-scorers while remaining unbeaten in WVC girls lacrosse with a 17-2 rout of Tunkhannock.
Depth also helped the Crestwood boys tennis team to a 4-1, WVC victory over MMI Prep with straight-set doubles wins by the teams of Sean Rossi-Braiden Fallbright and Anthony Lettieri-Tyler Furedi.
