UPDATED: 11:47 p.m.

The change in enrollment classifications of the teams from the championship Wyoming Area program has helped alter the outlook of this year’s team title chases.

Wyoming Area, which won its fourth straight Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 boys and second straight WVC Division 2 girls title this season, is up from Class 2A to 3A as part of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association’s routine review of enrollment figures every two years.

Last year, the Warriors won the Class 2A boys title and the Lady Warriors were second in Class 2A girls behind Montrose.

Mid Valley was second behind Wyoming Area in Class 2A boys last season, but enters this year’s meet as the clearest favorite in any of the four team races.

Based on an analysis of the projected points, using seeds going into the meet, here is what to expect from the team title races:

Mid Valley has the potential to run away with the Class 2A boys title where Holy Redeemer is the only team that appears capable of mounting a threat.

Riverside, Dunmore and Lakeland should separate themselves from the rest of the pack and finish in the top five.

There could be four new champions this season.

The girls favorites are Abington Heights, in Class 3A, and Lakeland, in Class 2A.

An extremely tight race could develop in Class 3A boys.

Valley View won the Robert Spagna Lackawanna Track Conference Championship Meet Class 3A boys title last week, but a different combination of teams and competitors has defending district champion North Pocono even closer to the Cougars this week.

If the meet goes according to seeds, the Cougars, Trojans and WVC Division 1 and overall champion Hazleton Area could all end up packed within five points of each other.

The battle doesn’t end there. Dallas, Delaware Valley and Abington Heights all project to within 20 points of the lead. Dallas shared first place with Hazleton Area in WVC Division 1 while Delaware Valley won LTC Division 2.

By comparison, the other three team races combined feature just two other teams within that range of the favorite.

Dallas barely meets that description in its effort to beat out the favorite, Abington Heights, in Class 3A girls. Both went unbeaten while winning the Division 1 titles in their conferences.

LTC Division 2 winner and defending meet champion Wallenpaupack or WVC Championship Meet winner Crestwood should be the best of the rest.

Lakeland is favored over Lake-Lehman in Class 2A girls where Holy Redeemer and Montrose are likely to fight for third.

After leading Susquehanna to a state team championship last season, Tatum Norris should have the Lady Sabers battling Mid Valley for fifth.

The analysis of the seeds last year correctly pointed to the top three teams in all four sets of standings. It also identified three of the team champions and named Montrose and Wyoming Area co-favorites in Class 2A girls with the Lady Meteors ultimately winning.

The District 2 Track and Field Championships get underway at Memorial Stadium Monday afternoon.
