District players fall at state tennis

The Abington Heights doubles team got caught up in a lengthy match and Western Wayne freshman singles player Tristan Vivona also played three sets, but District 2’s singles and doubles representatives all were eliminated in the first round of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Boys Tennis Championships Friday at the Hershey Indoor Racquet Club.

Sophomore Praneel Mallaiah and senior Luke Morgan from Abington Heights won a first-set tiebreaker and fought through two more competitive sets before losing to Cumberland Valley’s Sami Kazi and Ross Kluger, 6-7 (4-7), 7-5, 6-4, in Class 3A doubles.

Vivona also won his first set. He lost in Class 2A singles to Masterman’s Ajay Sheth, 6-3, 1-6, 6-0.

Players from Masterman, a Philadelphia school, knocked out both District 2 Class 2A entries.

The doubles team of Kevin McHale-Daniel Li eliminated Scranton Prep’s Akhilesh Velaga-Ethan Borick, 6-0, 6-4.

Dallastown’s Hayden Koons defeated Valley View’s Luke Kotcho, 6-0, 6-0, in Class 3A singles.
