Elk Lake climbs in rankings

Elk Lake posted its second and third shutouts of the season while extending its winning streak to eight games, allowing the Lady Warriors to move up two spots in the latest Riverfront Sports Super Six Softball Power Rankings of District 2 teams.

The new rankings were posted Sunday night with, limited movement.

Riverside moved into the Small School Rankings where Elk Lake made the jump from fifth to third, two teams dropped down and one dropped out.

The Big School rankings are unchanged after the six teams in the original rankings combined to go 13-0 by a total of 141-18 in the past week.

Unbeatens Abington Heights and Mid Valley remain on top of the Big (Class 6A, 5A and 4A) and Small (3A, 2A and A) School rankings respectively.

Abington Heights is one of three unbeaten Big Schools. Mid Valley is the only remaining unbeaten Small School after Dunmore suffered its first two losses in the past week.

Pittston Area, West Scranton, Tunkhannock, North Pocono and Valley View follow Abington Heights in the Big School rankings.

Abington Heights ripped Scranton Prep, 14-0, in its only game. Pittston Area won four times to improve to 10-0, tied for the best in the district. West Scranton won three times by a total of 30-3. Tunkhannock and Valley View each won twice while North Pocono remained unbeaten by winning its only game.

Mid Valley also got to 10-0 by winning three times.

Holy Redeemer did not play, but remained second at 4-1.

Elk Lake beat Montrose, 17-0, and Susquehanna, 10-0, to take over third from Holy Cross, the team in beat in last year’s District 2 Class 2A championship game.

Holy Cross split one-run games, beating Dunmore and losing to Western Wayne. The Lady Crusaders slipped to fourth.

Dunmore’s two losses, to Holy Cross and Mid Valley, dropped the Lady Bucks from fourth to fifth.

Riverside only won one of three games and is just at .500, but the Lady Vikes still moved into the rankings this week. They lost to two ranked Big Schools and topped rival and previous No. 6 Old Forge, 13-5.

Old Forge fell from sixth to out of the rankings when it dipped to .500 with the Riverside loss coming in the only game of the week for the Lady Devils.
