MOOSIC – The long wait was over for Elias Owens.
He made sure the same could be said for the Elk Lake baseball program.
Owens fired a one-hitter and reached base in all three plate appearances May 29 as Elk Lake shut out Mountain View, 4-0, in the Class 2A championship game for its first District 2 baseball title in 20 years.
“This is amazing,” Owens said. “I wanted to play on this field since I was little. I had one opportunity, but got rained out.
“So finally getting the chance and being able to get the win, … I loved every second of it.”
Owens struck out eight, walked two and hit a batter. He held the Eagles hitless for 5 1/3 innings until Bronson Kilmer’s groundball got through the left side.
Elk Lake was playing without head coach Tony Rezykowski, who received a two-game supplemental suspension after being ejected from the district semifinal. Rezykowski will also miss the Monday Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association state tournament opener at home at 4:30 against District 3 champion Kutztown (17-5).
The Warriors (19-4) scored twice each in the first and third innings.
Owens, who went 2-for-2 with a double and a walk, was part of both run-scoring innings.
Brayden McMicken reached on a two-out error in the first. Owens doubled to drive him in and then scored on Dawson Sherman’s single.
McMicken got the third inning started with a one-out infield single. Owens walked and both scored on a two-out throwing error.
