Officials from Districts 2 and 11 agreed Wednesday night to set the Class A girls Subregional championship game as a Friday 2 p.m. start, completing what will now be an 11-game, three-day schedule for the eighth year of basketball championship games at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.
The District 2 committee went into Wednesday’s games with 10 championship games in place – eight District 2-only contests covering Classes 2A through 5A and two District 2-4 Class 6A Subregionals.
Wednesday’s results determined whether one or two of the Class A games would be played within District 2.
The Mountain View girls won their semifinal, giving them the chance to play in the first District 2-11 Subregional final at the arena. Previously, when Districts 2 and 11 had a subregional, District 2 also conducted separate championship games at the arena that did not qualify teams for the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association state tournament. Those games have been eliminated for more consistency with how District 2 handles other sports.
At one time, Class A girls had been considered as a possible start of what would be a Thursday tripleheader. Weather delaying the semifinals until Wednesday gave the districts a chance to reconsider, rather than making Mountain View play twice in less than 24 hours.
Mountain View will play Pottsville Nativity from District 11 in the championship game in the first appearance for either school at the arena.
There are now two games Thursday, four Friday and five Saturday.
Arena management issued a press release with details regarding the event once the schedule was finalized.
Among the items of interest:
- Sunday is available for weather-related cancellations, a scenario that appears less likely now that weekend forecasts has been altered.
- Tickets for all finals are $8 for all ages. Ages five and under are free. Tickets are on sale at NBT Bank Box Office at Mohegan Sun Arena or online at Ticketmaster.com. Online tickets allow for faster entry into the building, but do include a service charge.
- There are no additional fees for parking.
- Tickets are good for as many games as a fan would like to view each day, but there is no free re-entry. Once leaving the building, a new ticket is needed.
- District 2 Gold passes will not be honored at the arena.
- Fans are encouraged to arrive early to allow for traffic, ticketing and security.
- Doors will open one hour before the first game of the day and remain open until halftime of the last game.
- Game programs will be available at the door, courtesy of Allied Services, with program donations going to support the rehabilitation of pediatric patients within Allied Services.
- There will be walk-through metal detectors at every arena entrance and a clear-bag policy. Purses, backpacks and diaper bags are no longer allowed inside the arena.
- All transactions at arena concession stands are cashless. Major credit cards and mobile pay are accepted. The box office does accept cash and credit cards.
