GIRLS TENNIS: District 2 semis set

Crestwood edged Delaware Valley, 3-2, in Class 3A and four other teams advanced Tuesday when the quarterfinal round of the District 2 team girls tennis tournament was completed at the home courts of the higher seeds.

West Scranton and North Pocono also won Tuesday, joining Crestwood and top-seed Abington Heights, which won on Monday, in the Class 3A semifinals.

Wyoming Seminary and Riverside on in Class 2A to join Scranton Prep and Dallas, which had already advanced to the Class 2A semifinals.

All the home teams advanced into the semifinals and finals will be played Thursday at Kirby Park.

Delaware Valley put together an upset bid by winning a pair of three-set matches, but Crestwood pulled out the win with Madison Van Gorden and Samantha Olszyk winning second doubles over Abby Lloyd and Ceanna Williams, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2.

Crestwood’s other two points came at first and third singles.

Hannah Ziegler defeated Sierra Hartman, 6-2, 6-0, at the top spot. Shannon Griffiths won by injury default after beating Mikayla Courtright, 6-4, in the first set.

Noelle Holderith won second singles for Delaware Valley, 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3 over Megan McLaughlin.

Elena Cirello-Jessica Wilson rallied to win at first doubles, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, over Olivia Richards Sydney Bruno.

West Scranton defeated Wallenpaupack, 4-0, and North Pocono blanked Hazleton Area, 5-0, in the other Class 3A matches.

Gabrielle Chantiloupe defeated Rebecca Husson, 6-4, 6-3, for West Scranton in a competitive first singles match.

The other matches were even tighter.

The Lady Invaders won three of their four points in three sets and the remaining match could not be decided before darkness.

Madison Maloney defeated Erika Badner, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, at second singles and Mia Butka downed Frankie Toppie, 6-4, 6-7 (3-7), 6-2, at the third spot.

Camilla Sphabmixay-Gianna Tallo defeated Abby Schroeder-Sara Katz, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, at first doubles. West Scranton’s team of Molly Donovan-Isabella Gigliotta was ahead of Lili Elgayor-Sarah Niemiec, 7-6 (7-5), 4-3, when the match was halted.

North Pocono rolled over Hazleton Area with five straight-set victories.

Julie Schrive, Madison Schriver, Parri Salak, Maddie Carney-Nora Pencek and Shivani Patel-Ella Pencek had the wins for North Pocono.

Top-seeded Wyoming Seminary and Riverside each swept singles to advance into the rematch of last year’s semifinal in which fourth-seeded Riverside upset the Blue Knights.

Wyoming Seminary defeated Tunkhannock, 3-0, and Riverside defeated Holy Redeemer, 4-1.

Ilana Rosenthal, Ella Krypel and Victoria Martinez all won, 6-0, 6-0, at singles for unbeaten Wyoming Valley Conference champion Wyoming Seminary.

With the outcome decided, the doubles matches were halted.

Karissa Ghigiarelli, Madeline DeFaber-Schumacher and Bella Aniska produced the singles sweep for Riverside.
