Hilling, Cougars run past Trojans

Connor Hilling carried 20 times for 195 yards and 3 touchdowns Friday night as Valley View put together its top offensive effort of the season on the way to a 33-13 victory over visiting North Pocono in the Lackawanna Football Conference Division 1 opener for both teams.

The Cougars opened leads of 12-0 after one quarter, 26-0 at halftime and 33-0 after three quarters.

Valley View, which has won three straight since an Opening Night loss, came in averaging just 22 points per game. The Cougars produced more yardage than the previous week’s 35-point effort against Honesdale in which Valley View had just seven points in the first half.

The offense got started earlier Friday.

Hilling scored on a 5-yard run before the midway point in the first quarter, then Adam Howanitz found Taheed Jewell for a 27-yard touchdown pass.

After Hilling ran seven yards for another touchdown midway through the second quarter, the Cougars added a score in the closing seconds of the half. Howanitz hit Preston Reed with a 6-yard touchdown pass.

Valley View outgained North Pocono, 260-131 on the ground and 365-152 overall.

Howanitz was 4-for-7 passing for 93 yards.

Reed added 60 yards rushing on 5 attempts.

In addition to his touchdown, Jewell had a 50-yard catch.

Dylan Walsh led the Valley View defense with five tackles and four assists. Dominic Memo picked off a pass.

North Pocono (2-2) scored twice in the fourth quarter on a 6-yard run by Kevin Wickizer and a 1-yarder by Zack Benzie.
