DUNMORE – Hayden Hosie scored 13 points and host Holy Cross shook off a slow start to defeat Pittston Area, 42-36, Tuesday night in a non-league meeting of defending District 2 boys basketball champions.
Pittston Area, the Class 5A champion, opened a 9-2 lead after one quarter over Holy Cross, the Class 2A champion.
Holy Cross coach Al Callejas went with different lineup combinations in the second quarter when the Crusaders closed within 15-14 at halftime.
Cullen Moran, one of the players who came off the bench, scored eight points in the third quarter when Holy Cross took a 28-25 lead.
The Crusaders improved to 1-1.
Logan Tierney scored five points, Hosie scored four and Moran hit his third 3-pointer during the fourth quarter. Tierney went 3-for-4 from the line during that time.
Silvio Giardina made two 3-pointers in the first quarter and had Pittston Area’s only three in the game while scoring 18 points.
Giardina’s last 3-pointer was the only field goal of the fourth quarter by the Patriots (1-2). They went 8-for-11 from the line in the last eight minutes to stay within striking distance.
