Holy Redeemer girls take over first during week full of title clinchings

An eventful week of District 2 soccer with divisional titles decided or closed in on has led to a similarly eventful week in terms of changes in the latest Riverfront United Super Six Soccer Power Rankings of district teams.

Newly crowned Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 champion Holy Redeemer has taken over the No. 1 Small School girls spot while two teams have climbed to No. 2 and two more to No. 3 in the other sets of rankings.

The other rankings were released Thursday, in time for more showdowns between ranked teams with titles on the line.

Crestwood will try to claim the WVC Division 1 girls title Thursday in a game between two of the top four Big Schools.

Holy Cross and Dunmore will decide the Lackawanna League Division 3 boys title – barring another tie between them – when the top two Small Schools meet Monday, in a game that was rescheduled from Friday.

Both Abington Heights teams won Lackawanna Division 1 championships and held on to top rankings in Big Schools. The Holy Cross boys preserved District 2’s only perfect soccer record to remain first among Small School boys.

Big School boys

Abington Heights finished perfect in Lackawanna Division 1 by allowing just one goal in three wins to improve to 16-1 overall and hold No. 1.

North Pocono and WVC Division 1 leader Dallas each moved up one spot into second and third. North Pocono beat a ranked opponent, Delaware Valley, in its only game. Dallas also won its only game to remain unbeaten in its last four.

Wyoming Area tied with Crestwood in its only game and slipped from second to fourth.

Delaware Valley won its other game and gained one spot into fifth.

Hazleton Area won twice and rejoined the rankings in sixth.

Wilkes-Barre Area lost twice and fell from the rankings.

Small School boys

Holy Cross and Dunmore each won twice to set up Friday’s first-place game, which the No. 1. Crusaders will host.

Dunmore has a district-high, 16-game unbeaten streak. Holy Cross is unbeaten in its 13 games this season.

Wyoming Seminary won the WVC Division 2 title and moved into third, trading places with Lake-Lehman. The Blue Knights won twice to win the race where the third through fifth teams in the rankings were packed within a game of each other and extend their winning streak to four.

Lake-Lehman split its games.

Holy Redeemer won three times and held on to fifth.

Lackawanna Division 3 leader Old Forge won its only game. The No. 6 Blue Devils have won eight straight, the last three by shutout.

Big School girls

Abington Heights held No. 1 by winning three times and taking the division title.

Crestwood has clinched at least a tie for first place in WVC Division 1 and can take the title with a win Thursday at home against Wyoming Valley West.

Valley View dropped from second to third after losing twice.

Wyoming Valley West held fourth by winning twice to extend its streak to seven.

Dallas and Delaware Valley remained in fifth and sixth. Dallas has won four straight. Delaware Valley split two games.

Small School girls

Holy Redeemer shut out Hanover Area, 9-0, and Hazleton Area, 7-0, then handled former No. 1 Wyoming Area, 5-1, with the WVC Division 2 title at stake.

The teams had tied when they met at Wyoming Area earlier in the season.

Holy Redeemer has won five straight by a total of 31-1.

Wyoming Area won its other game and settled into second.

Lakeland, Lake-Lehman, Montrose and Mid Valley remained in third through sixth.

Lakeland clinched at least a tie for first in Lackawanna Division 3. It won three games by a total of 16-1 and has won 11 in a row.

Lake-Lehman won its only game and Montrose won its two games.

Mid Valley went 2-1, remaining unbeaten within Lackawanna Division 3 where it took the title.
