Unbeaten Abington Heights climbed to the top while Blue Ridge, the only team to take a set off the Comets this season, moved into the second spot in the latest Riverfront Sports Super Six Boys Volleyball Power Rankings of District 2 teams.
Lackawanna League teams now hold down the top two spots in the rankings in a sport where the Wyoming Valley Conference has generally been the clear stronger of the two District 2 leagues historically.
The shuffle follows an eventful week in which Abington Heights became the final district team to still have a perfect record intact and Tunkhannock moved to the brink of a WVC championship by winning its two most important matches.
Along the way, Blue Ridge, the second-place Lackawanna team swept the WVC’s second- and third-place teams Saturday on its home court.
Abington Heights continued its steady climb to take over the No. 1 ranking with a 9-0 record that includes eight 3-0 sweeps and a 3-1 win at Blue Ridge.
Blue Ridge has the district’s second-best record at 11-1 after beating ranked opponents Holy Redeemer and Dallas. The Raiders jumped up two spots from fourth to second.
Tunkhannock had a busy week, widening its WVC lead by winning the match between conference unbeatens with Holy Redeemer, then clinching at least a tie for first place by beating Dallas, the team that had temporarily moved into second place. But, the Tigers also suffered their first two losses, both to teams outside the district, during weekend non-league action.
Holy Redeemer dropped from first to fourth with the losses to Tunkhannock and Blue Ridge in its only two matches.
Dallas split four matches, but held on to fifth.
Berwick won twice, building its winning streak to four, and remained in sixth.
