Lady Bucks return to No. 1 spot

Dunmore is back on top of Lackawanna League Division 3 girls and back in the No. 1 Small School girls position in the Riverfront Sports Super Six Power Rankings of District 2 teams.

The Lady Bucks opened pursuit of their 10th straight Division 3 title by shutting out Mid Valley for the first half. Dunmore topped Mid Valley, 58-23, and Lakeland, 57-24, to end the first week of Lackawanna League play in a tie for first in Division 3 with Riverside at 2-0.

Dunmore went from second to first in the newest power rankings, which were released Sunday night.

Abington Heights, in Big Schools, and Holy Redeemer, in Small Schools, remain in the No. 1 boys spots.

Scranton Prep still leads Big School girls even after suffering its first loss.

The Mid Valley and Holy Cross boys moved up in the rankings this week along with the Wilkes-Barre Area girls.

Pittston Area and Blue Ridge boys join the rankings this week.

The Hazleton Area and Old Forge boys, as well as the Abington Heights and Wyoming Valley West girls, slipped in the latest rankings.

The Delaware Valley and Carbondale boys dropped out.

The list of unbeaten basketball teams in District 2 was reduced from six to two. The last three unbeaten boys teams all lost.

Wilkes-Barre Area visits Pittston Area Monday night for a Wyoming Valley Conference girls game that will cut the number of overall unbeatens from two to one.

This week’s schedule also includes a No. 1-vs. No.-2 meeting in Big School boys when Abington Heights hosts Valley View Tuesday to determine sole possession of the Lackawanna League Division 1 lead.

Lake-Lehman dropped from No. 1 to No. 2 in Small School girls when Dunmore returned to the spot it had up until last week.

The rest of the Small School girls rankings remain the same with Montrose, Holy Redeemer, Old Forge and Wyoming Seminary following Dunmore and Lake-Lehman in third through sixth places.

Scranton Prep followed up a 2-0 Lackawanna Division 1 start, which created an early division lead, by losing Saturday in New Jersey to unbeaten Red Bank Catholic.

Pittston Area and Hazleton Area remained second and third after the Lady Patriots won their head-to-head meeting in a close battle Thursday.

Wilkes-Barre Area’s 11-0 start, which includes two more wins, pushed the Wolfpack up from sixth to fourth.

Abington Heights and Wyoming Valley West each dropped one position into fifth and sixth.

Mid Valley and Holy Cross, the co-leaders in Lackawanna Division 3 boys, used their two wins each there to move up one position into second and third among Small Schools. They trail Holy Redeemer, which had a 3-0 week.

Old Forge suffered its first loss, against Holy Cross, and dipped from second to fourth.

Riverside remained in fifth while Blue Ridge used two wins to start Lackawanna Division 4 play and move back into the rankings in sixth. The Raiders replace Carbondale, which lost its first two Lackawanna Division 3 games.

8Abington Heights beat Scranton and Scranton Prep to begin the Lackawanna Division 1 boys season, then lost a meeting of unbeatens with Berks Catholic Saturday. The Comets remained in the top Big School spot.

Valley View won twice to tie the Comets for the Lackawanna Division 1 lead going into Tuesday and hold on to second.

Dallas and Scranton Prep remained in third and fourth.

Pittston Area joined the rankings in the fifth spot by taking the WVC Division 1 lead with a win over Hazleton Area, which slipped from fifth to sixth.

Delaware Valley fell out of the rankings with consecutive losses.
