Comets, Spartanettes ranked first

Abington Heights and Mid Valley, two of five unbeaten teams in the district, are the No. 1 teams in the first Riverfront Sports Super Six Softball Power Rankings of District 2 teams this season.

Mid Valley, a state Class 3A finalist in 2021, ended last season as the No. 1 team in the Small School Rankings, which are for Class 3A, 2A and A teams.

Abington Heights, No. 2 in the final rankings last season, is the top team in Big Schools. The Big School rankings are for Class 6A, 5A and 4A.

The six Small School teams and the top four Big Schools are all teams that were ranked at the end of 2021.

Abington Heights is followed by Pittston Area, West Scranton and Tunkhannock.

North Pocono and Valley View are fifth and sixth.

Mid Valley is followed in the Small School rankings by Holy Redeemer, Holy Cross, Dunmore, Elk Lake and Old Forge.

Abington Heights (4-0) is the defending champion and current leader of Lackawanna League Division 1. The Comets have outscored their opponents, 46-14.

Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 leader Pittston Area (6-0) is second. The Lady Patriots ended last season in fourth.

West Scranton is third, the same position it held at the end of last season. The Lady Invaders won District 2-4 Class 5A title on the way to a berth in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association state semifinals. They are 6-1 this season with the loss coming to No. 1 Abington Heights.

Tunkhannock finished first in the Big School rankings a year ago when it won WVC Division 1 and District 2 Class 4A before playing in the state final. The Lady Tigers are ranked fourth with a 4-2 record.

District 2-4 Class 6A Subregional champion Hazleton Area and Lackawanna Division 2 champ Honesdale occupied the fifth and sixth spots to end last season.

Lackawanna Division 2 leader North Pocono (4-0) and Valley View (4-1) replace them to begin this season.

North Pocono has outscored opponents, 44-6.

Valley View has lost only to West Scranton.

Mid Valley won Lackawanna League Division 3 and District 2 Class 3A titles last season on the way to the state championship game. The top-ranked Spartanettes are 7-0 this season, outscoring opponents, 63-7.

Defending WVC Division 2 champion and current leader Holy Redeemer (2-1) is second, the same position it finished last season.

Holy Cross, which took No. 1 Mid Valley into extra innings in its only loss, is third. The Lady Crusaders were ranked fourth at the end of last season.

Dunmore is 6-0 and shares the Lackawanna Division 3 lead with Mid Valley. The Lady Bucks, who have outscored teams, 45-15, were sixth at the end of last season.

Elk Lake (6-1) opens in fifth. The Lady Warriors were unbeaten Lackawanna Division 4 and District 2 Class 2A champions last season when they wound up ranked third.

Old Forge, the No. 5 team at the end of last season, is ranked sixth. The Lady Devils won the District 2 Class A championship.
