Lady Crusaders romp in opener

The Holy Cross offense showed it was ready for the start of the postseason.

The Lady Crusaders scored 11 runs in the first inning Monday afternoon on the way to a 14-1, five-inning rout of visiting Montrose in a District 2 Class 2A softball quarterfinal.

Gianna Coroniti’s three-run double highlighted the big first inning for Holy Cross.

The Lady Crusaders had just four hits, but three of them were doubles, while taking advantage of a dozen Montrose walks.

Ava Schmidt singled in two runs for a 3-0 lead and Grace Rogers doubled in two more to make it 5-0. Coriniti’s one-out hit made it 9-0.

The Lady Crusaders had the lead at 11-0 with just one out and that out came on a runner trying to move up on Schmidt’s RBI single.

The offensive outburst came between a pair of 1-2-3 innings in which Mia Scalese struck out two batters each time.

Scalese struck out six while giving up three hits in four innings. Ava Schmidt pitched a scoreless fifth and struck out two more.

Schmidt went 2-for-3 with a double, three RBI and two runs scored.

Second-seeded Holy Cross (13-8) advances to host sixth-seeded Lakeland (8-11) Wednesday at 4:30. Lakeland advanced by winning at Blue Ridge, 9-8, in 10 innings.
