Lady Patriots rally, win at Berwick

Pittston Area returned to its winning ways Saturday afternoon, but Berwick made sure it was not easy.

Ava Callahan scored a game-high 11 points and the Lady Patriots held the Lady Bulldogs to a single point in the third quarter on their way to a 32-27, Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 game in the only league non-league girls basketball game played Saturday.

Pittston Area used the win to rejoin a first-place tie with Wyoming Valley West, the team it lost to Thursday.

The Lady Patriots were playing for the second of three straight games with assistant Natalie Winters running the team while head coach Jeff Gregory sits out for disciplinary action from the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association stemming from his alleged actions following a freshman game in which he filled in as coach at the end.

Pittston Area needed a second-half rally to improve to 15-1 overall, while Berwick, which slipped into a tie for last place, fell to 1-7 and 2-13.

Callahan hit 3-pointers in each of the first three quarters. In the first quarter that was all Pittston Area could manage offensively while falling behind, 5-3.

RaeAnna Andrews made two 3-pointers in the second quarter as Berwick took an 18-15 halftime lead. Andrews and Rachel Whitenight scored eight points each to lead the Lady Bulldogs.

Pittston Area used an 8-1 advantage in the third quarter to take a 23-19 lead.
