Mid Valley softball by the numbers

Some key statistics for the Mid Valley softball team that finished second in the state when it lost, 5-3, to Mount Pleasant in Friday’s Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Class 3A state championship game.

Statistic: The number of home runs by the Spartanettes. The rest of the story: Maranda Runco hit 19 of the homers but Mid Valley got at least one home run from five other players. Lindsey Jason and Kaylee Terranella hit three each. Madison Kizer and Emma Kobylanski each had two. Courtney Rebar also homered. The Spartanettes hit five home runs in the state tournament opener against Loyalsock Township.

Statistic: Mid Valley’s total wins. The rest of the story: The Spartanettes, who lost three times, joined state Class 4A finalist Tunkhannock, which won 23, as the only District 2 teams to reach 20 overall victories. Mid Valley went 13-1 in Lackawanna League Division 3 to win the title.

Statistic: Mid Valley’s team batting average. The rest of the story: Runco batted .671 to lead the way, going 47-for-70. Kat Davis (.446), Jason (.425) and Chiara Zavislak (.414) also batted better than .400. That production led to 8.2 runs per game for the team.

Statistic: Stolen bases by Davis and Zavislak. The rest of the story: Davis and Zavislak shared the team lead in one of the two categories not led by Runco. The other was triples where Davis had three.

Statistic: The number of intentional walks opponents issued to Runco in the playoffs. The rest of the story: During the six-game postseason, Runco only saw pitches in seven plate appearances. She went 3-for-5 with three home runs, a walk, a hit by pitch. The only times she was retired were on two deep flyouts in the state final.
