Danny Nemitz from Mid Valley again was recognized Wednesday afternoon for standing out among District 2 boys basketball players in the 2022-23 season.
Nemitz was selected as third team in Class 3A, making him the only player from District 2 recognized on the boys all-state team selected by Pennsylvania Sports Writers.
“It’s one of those things that’s hard to put into words,” Mid Valley coach Mike Abda said. “For his whole career, he’s given us his best effort on the court, in the weight room and in films.
“He’s been a tremendous teammate and captain. He’s always held himself to an extremely high standard with the priority of winning always being first.”
The senior, who became Mid Valley’s all-time leader scorer during the season, earlier had been named by NEPASportsNation.com as the Player of the Year on its all-District 2 team.
Also the Lackawanna League Division 3 Player of the Year, Nemitz averaged 17.4 points this season to push his career total to 1,321 points. He had been a first-team Lackawanna Division 3 all-star choice by NEPABasketball.com, which merged into NEPASportsNation.com prior to the most recent season, each of the first three years of his high school career.
Mid Valley went 20-7 and finished second behind two local powerhouses, Holy Cross in Lackawanna Division 3 and Holy Redeemer in District 2 Class 3A. The Spartans won a first-round Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association game before Nemitz scored 30 points in a loss to defending state champion Devon Prep in the final game of his high school career.
Nemitz also averaged 5.8 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 2.0 steals and 0.5 blocked shots per game. The 6-foot point guard shot 44 percent from the floor and 80 percent from the foul line. He led Mid Valley in points, assists, steals, blocks and free throw percentage.
“He’s been a great representative of our basketball program and of our school district,” Abda said. “As a coach, you just love to see when hard work pays off.
“When you work as hard as Danny does, even with the work, it’s not a guarantee that things are going to work out. It’s just awesome to see the year that he had and for him to get some accolades and to do that while having winning seasons and being a great teammate.”
