MMI Prep’s Woobie Kupsky captured state gold in the Class 2A boys 200-yard individual medley Wednesday to highlight District 2 results in the first of four days of competition in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Champions at Bucknell University.
Kupsky placed fourth during qualifying, but just two-tenths of a second behind the leader. He then lowered his time from 1:51.97 to 1:49.99 to win by one-quarter of a second.
The PIAA Championships continue with the remainder of the Class 2A competition Thursday, followed by Class 3A Friday and Saturday.
Kupsky was not alone in producing big finishes in Class 2A boys.
Maddoc Watkins from Dallas finished second in the 200 freestyle in 1:40.29, placing behind only Indiana’s Preston Kessler’s time of 1:39.27.
Zhantore Akylbekov from Wyoming Seminary was third in the 100 butterfly.
The Dallas 200 freestyle relay team placed 10th.
The top eight qualifiers in each swimming event raced in the final for the eight available medals.
The next eight qualifiers competed in the B Final to place between ninth and 16th and score points for their teams.
