Nanticoke wins semi, moves up

Nanticoke continued to bounce around the Electric City Volleyball Academy Elite Eight Power Rankings of District 2 girls teams, moving up into fourth place this week.

The Trojanettes, Hazleton Area and Blue Ridge all made positive moves in this week’s rankings, which were released Wednesday morning. The district’s four volleyball titles will be decided in doubleheaders Wednesday and Thursday nights at North Pocono and Wilkes-Barre Area.

Nanticoke traded places with Crestwood, the team it shared fourth place with in the Wyoming Valley Conference, when it beat the Lady Comets for the second time this season to advance to Thursday’s Class 3A final.

While Nanticoke went from fifth to fourth, Hazleton Area moved up from eighth to sixth and Blue Ridge rejoined the rankings after dropping out early in the season.

Hazleton Area did not play during the week because it had already won its semifinal. The Lady Cougars used their five-match winning streak to reach the rankings last week and the Class 4A finalists benefitted from WVC teams going 4-0, including beating the top two Class 2A seeds, against Lackawanna League teams in the first week of district play.

WVC teams now occupy the top six spots in the rankings.

Delaware Valley won once to improve to 17-0 and hold down first going into Wednesday’s final with Hazleton Area.

Berwick reached Thursday’s 3A final and held second.

Holy Redeemer advanced to Thursday’s 2A final and remained third.

Nanticoke, Crestwood and Hazleton Area are followed by Lackawanna divisional champions Western Wayne and Blue Ridge in seventh and eighth.

Lackawanna Division 1 champion Western Wayne was upset by Lake-Lehman as the top seed in Class 2A and fell from sixth to seventh.

Blue Ridge, the Lackawanna Division 2 champion, holds a recent win over Lake-Lehman and moved into the eighth spot. The Raiders, who will face Mountain View in Wednesday’s Class A final, have won their last 14 matches within District 2, losing only to District 4’s Northeast Bradford during that stretch.

Dunmore, which had been seventh, fell from the rankings.
