Members of the Hazleton Area girls basketball team were safe and unharmed, according to head coach Joe Gavio, following a Thursday afternoon school bus crash on Interstate 81 that led to the postponement of the team’s scheduled game in Scranton.
“We’re very lucky,” Gavio said.
The team was traveling north near Montage Mountain in Lackawanna County when the side of the bus was struck by a dump truck.
The incident left the bus disabled along the side of the road with a flat tire among the damages.
“Everybody’s good. Thank God,” Gavio said in a late afternoon telephone interview. “Paramedics checked everyone out at the scene.
“Everything’s good to go.”
Gavio said the team spent hours alongside the highway and the players were returning home.
“We’re looking forward to playing that game,” he said of the challenge of facing unbeaten Scranton High School, “but we’ll do it another time.”
The game, originally scheduled for Thursday night had been moved up to Thursday afternoon with both schools dismissed early and heading into holiday vacations.
