North Pocono climbs to fifth

North Pocono took Blue Ridge to five sets in a playoff for the Lackawanna League Division 1 championship, then swept Shamokin in the District 2-4 Class 3A Subregional quarterfinals to regain one position in this week’s Electric City Volleyball Academy Elite Eight Power Rankings of District 2 girls teams.

The Lady Trojans, the only team in the rankings to play more than once as the regular season closed and the postseason started slowly, swapped positions with Dallas, moving from sixth to fifth in the rankings that were released late Friday morning.

Three ranked teams did not play at all during the week while four played once each.

The top four teams are all top seeds in district or subregional tournaments where they are set to host semifinal doubleheaders.

Berwick remains first, followed by Delaware Valley, Holy Redeemer and Blue Ridge.

The unbeaten Lady Bulldogs are the top seeds in the District 2-4 Class 3A Subregional. They opened the playoffs with a sweep of Nanticoke.

Delaware Valley and Holy Redeemer had the week off. Delaware Valley hosts the District 2-4 Class 4A Subregional semifinals Saturday afternoon. Holy Redeemer hosts the District 2 Class 2A semifinals Monday.

Blue Ridge won the Lackawanna Division 1 playoff in its only match and takes an 18-1 record into the District 2 Class A semifinals that it is hosting Friday night.

Dallas defeated Tunkhannock in a Class 3A quarterfinal, but slipped behind North Pocono.

Lake-Lehman, which was idle as the second seed in Class 2A, and Pittston Area, which won a Class 3A quarterfinal, remain in the seventh and eighth spots.
