Owens pitched title game shutout

ELIAS OWENS, Elk Lake senior pitch/infielder

Only game: Owens tossed a one-hit shutout, carrying a no-hitter through 5 1/3 innings of the May 29 District 2 Class 2A championship game in which Elk Lake defeated Mountain View, 4-0. He struck out eight and walked two. Owens also went 2-for-2 with a double and a walk and was involved in both innings in which the Warriors scored.

Season batting: Owens batted .347 with a .455 on-base percentage, including a season-ending, 8-4 loss to Kutztown in the first round of the state playoffs in a game that came after the period of the award-winning effort. He had 9 doubles and 4 home runs, along with 22 runs scored and 15 RBIs.

Season pitching: Owens went 8-2 with a 1.73 earned run average in 13 appearances. He struck out 101 in 64 2/3 innings while giving up 46 hits and just 16 walks.

About Elias: Owens has been a starter and top pitcher for all three of his high school seasons. When not on the mound, he played each infield position this season.

About the Warriors: Elk Lake won the Lackawanna League Division 3 title and its first District 2 championship in 20 years. The Warriors finished 12-2 in the division and 19-5 overall.
