PA’s Barr makes early impact

ELIJAH BARR, Pittston Area freshman pitcher/shortstop

Time period: April 3-9

Game One: Barr went 4-for-4 with a double, two stolen bases, four runs scored and two RBI in Pittston Area’s 14-4, six-inning victory over Berwick in the April 3 Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 opener.

Game Two: Barr pitched a five-inning, one-hitter in an 11-0 shutout of Tunkhannock Wednesday. He walked one and struck out four. Barr was 0-for-3 at the plate, but drew a walk and scored a run.

Season batting: Through Monday’s win over Crestwood, Barr is batting .500. He is 10-for-20 with a double, triple, three RBI and a team-high 13 runs scored.

Season pitching: Barr is 2-0 with a perfect 0.00 earned run average in three appearances. He has allowed just 5 hits in 11 1/3 scoreless innings with 2 walks and 11 strikeouts.

About Elijah: In his freshman season, Barr has usually served as designated hitter when not pitching. He has also started one game at shortstop and come off the bench to finish up there in another.

About the Patriots: Pittston Area used Monday’s 6-5 victory over Crestwood to keep pace with defending champion Hazleton Area as the WVC Division 1 co-leaders at 3-0. … The Patriots are 6-0 and leading the playoff ratings race for the top seed in the District 2 Class 5A Tournament.
