Pittston Area scored the tying and winning runs in the bottom of the seventh inning Thursday as Pittston Area pulled out a 3-2, non-league victory over Abington Heights in an early-season meeting of two teams expected to be among District 2’s top Big School baseball teams.
The game was the season opener for the Patriots, who went 12-2 in Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 last season, losing only to unbeaten Hazleton Area.
Abington Heights, the defending Lackawanna League Division 1 champion, slipped to 1-1.
Drew DeLucca drove in two runs and Jeremy Cawley drove in one for the Patriots.
Elijah Barr struck out four in 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief to get the win. He allowed just one hit.
Troy Davis had two hits in the win. Nick Cerasaro doubled.
Garrett Pietryka doubled and scored for Abington Heights.
The Comets scored runs in the first and fourth for a 2-0 lead before Pittston Area got one run back in the fifth.
