‘Paupack to meet host Honesdale in final of Jaycees girls tournament

Wallenpaupack will go for its second girls basketball tournament championship of the season.

Honesdale will get a second shot at winning its first.

The Lady Buckhorns and host Lady Hornets reached the final of the Honesdale Jaycees Tournament with victories Monday night.

Wallenpaupack (5-2) and Honesdale (4-2) will play for the title Wednesday night at 7:15.

Western Wayne and Forest City will meet for third place at 5:45.

Wallenpaupack opened the season by winning its own Lake Region Tip-Off Tournament.

A few days later, Honesdale made the title game of the Mike Duda Tournament, but lost to host Wyoming Valley West.

Wallenpaupack 39, Western Wayne 25

Ella Smith scored a game-high 14 points to lead Wallenpaupack to the victory in the tournament opener.

Smith had seven points in the third quarter when the Lady Buckhorns stretched their lead from 19-9 to 34-17.

Grace Steffen added 11 points in the win.

Raegan Palmer led Western Wayne with eight points.

Honesdale 36, Forest City 4

Honesdale gave up just a first-quarter and a third-quarter field goal while not allowing Forest City to get to the line.

The Lady Hornets opened a 20-2 lead in the first eight minutes and cruised from there.

Natalie Goldstein led the way with 12 points.

Ruby Martin added seven to a balanced attack.

Rachael Collins, who did all her scoring in the first quarter, and Elizabeth Meagher scored six points each while Karysn Kromko had five.

The Lady Hornets shot the game’s only two free throws, making one.
