Erika Badner’s five 3-pointers helped Wallenpaupack get its Lackawanna League girls basketball season off to an impressive start.
Western Wayne’s comeback made sure Karsyn Kromko’s five were not enough for Honesdale.
Wallenpaupack, Western Wayne and North Pocono all came up with wins Monday night when the league opened.
Wallenpaupack 60, Valley View 38
Ella Smith scored 17 points and Badner used her 3-pointers to add 15 as Wallenpaupack won a Division 1-2 crossover game on the road while the other Division 2 teams were playing each other.
That result is a positive sign for the Lady Buckhorns. Last season, Division 2 teams went 9-16 against Division 1 and those other than division champion Western Wayne were just 5-15 in the crossovers.
Grace Steffen added 11 points and Aviona Rosenthal chipped in with 8.
Wallenpaupack was in control from the start and outscored Valley View in every quarter. It led 17-6 after one quarter, 30-16 at halftime and 42-27 going into the fourth quarter.
Giada Costa led Valley View with 10 points. Molly Murphy added 7.
Both teams came into the start of league play with 6-3 records.
Western Wayne 42, Honesdale 41
Allie Pauler’s 3-pointer with three seconds remaining completed a comeback and lifted two-time defending champion Western Wayne to the Division 2 road victory.
Kromko’s 3-pointer from the left corner with 32 seconds left in the third gave Honesdale a 35-23 lead.
Western Wayne scored the last two points of the third quarter, then outscored Honesdale, 17-6, in the fourth quarter to rally for the win.
The Lady ‘Cats entered league play with just a 2-5 record while the Lady Hornets came in at 5-3.
Honesdale’s Natalie Goldstein had 9 points, 15 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals in the loss.
Western Wayne has won its last 17 games within the division.
North Pocono 45, Delaware Valley 27
North Pocono won the Division 2 opener on the road.
The Lady Trojans are 2-1, with the loss coming to unbeaten Gwynedd-Mercy, since starting the season 1-6.
