PIAA basketball opened Friday

While all 21 games involving District 2 teams were wiped out by weather Friday, games around the western and southern parts of the state went on as scheduled to open the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association basketball tournament.

Friday’s results included four boys and three girls games that will determine Tuesday’s second-round opponents for District 2 teams if they win today.

Action took place in Class 5A, 4A and A boys as well as 6A, 3A and 2A girls.

Scranton Prep, Valley View and Nanticoke all know who they will face next if they win Saturday opening-round games in Class 4A boys.

District 1 champion Bishop Shanahan (10-15) defeated Audenried, 61-56, and awaits the Scranton Prep-Octorara winner.

Pittsburgh North Catholic, the District 7 runner-up, improved to 20-7 with an 89-65 Hickory. North Catholic is up next for the Valley View-Shamokin winner.

District 12 champion Neumann-Goretti (23-3) hammered Middletown, 87-42. Neumann-Goretti will face the Nanticoke-Bethlehem Catholic winner.

Chester Charter Academy, the District 1 champion, is 20-5 after beating Lancaster Country Day, 58-44, in Class A boys. Forest City will face Chester Charter if it can get past Northumberland Christian.

Springfield (Delaware County) finished just eighth in District 1 Class 6A girls, but it improved to 20-7 by handling Philadelphia Central, 59-41. Springfield-Delco awaits the Wyoming Valley West-Abington winner.

Both District 2 Class 3A girls finalists know their next opponent if they can get through Saturday.

District 12 champion (16-10) Imhotep Charter is up next for the Dunmore-Bloomsburg winner after routing Pequea Valley, 60-37.

Philadelphia West Catholic, which lost to Imhotep Charter in the District 12 final, edged District 11 champion Palmerton, 43-42. West Catholic (13-12) will take on the Holy Redeemer-Mount Carmel winner.
