Pittston Area back in No. 1 position

The Pittston Area softball team is back at No. 1 after avenging its only loss of the last two seasons, beating the team that had taken away the top Big School spot in the Riverfront Sports Super Six Power Power Rankings of District 2 teams.

The Lady Patriots regained the Big School No. 1 position, jumping back up from No. 3, when the new rankings were released early Wednesday afternoon.

Tunkhannock fell to Pittston Area and Valley View also suffered its first loss, leaving District 2 without an unbeaten team.

Abington Heights rejoined the rankings after beating Valley View while Holy Redeemer, Old Forge and Hazleton Area also moved up this week.

Pittston Area downed Tunkhannock, 5-1, as part of a 3-0 week in which it also beat Wilkes-Barre Area and Crestwood, both by 11-0 scores. The defending state Class 5A champion Lady Patriots have won nine straight by a total of 88-5 since suffering a 3-2 loss at Tunkhannock.

Tunkhannock and Valley View each moved down one position into second and third.

The Lady Tigers won twice later in the week.

Valley View recovered to beat Scranton Prep, 12-1, after losing to Abington Heights, 6-5.

Abington Heights jumped from out of the rankings into fourth after going 3-0 with two wins against teams in the rankings. In addition to beating Valley View, the Comets downed West Scranton, 5-2.

Hazleton Area scored 37 runs while winning three games and moving from sixth to fifth.

West Scranton dropped from fifth to sixth. The Lady Invaders knocked North Pocono out of the rankings with a 10-2 victory, but lost to Abington Heights to snap a six-game winning streak.

Mid Valley, Elk Lake and Lake-Lehman remain 1-2-3 in Small Schools.

Mid Valley has clinched at least a tie for first place in Lackawanna League Division 2.

Lake-Lehman is the first District 2 team to clinch a regular-season title, wrapping up Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 with two more wins.

Holy Redeemer and Old Forge each gained one position into fourth and fifth after beating Holy Cross, which fell from fourth to sixth.

Other than those two head-to-head meetings, the ranked Small Schools combined for a 13-0 week.
