Pittston Area’s passing game produced three first-half touchdowns and its run defense held Hanover area to negative rushing yards Friday night as the visiting Patriots rolled through their Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 football opener, 40-12.
The Patriots scored 4 second-quarter touchdowns, all from at least 34 yards, while opening a 40-0 lead at halftime. The entire second half was played under the Mercy Rule.
Drew DeLucca threw touchdown passes to Kevin Lockett in each of the first two quarters, the second covering 44 yards in the final seconds of the half.
The longest touchdown came on a DeLucca pass to Robby Barbieri.
Harry Pugliese scored on a 6-yard run in the first quarter and a 34-yarder in the second quarter.
Anthony Cencetti returned a punt 44 yards for the first touchdown of the second quarter.
Hanover Area broke the shutout in the third quarter on Luis McCoy’s 87-yard fumble return. The Hawkeyes added a fourth-quarter score on a Sean Dooner pass to Christian Torres.
Pittston Area is 1-0 in the division and 2-2 overall. Hanover Area is 0-2 and 1-3.
