Relay strength fuels DV girls title

Delaware Valley swept the three relays Friday and Saturday at Wilkes-Barre Area High School to capture the District 2 Class 3A Swimming Championships.

Alexis Ristaino, Victoria Corcoran and Kaitlyn O’Connell each added an individual victory to participating on two of the winning relays as Delaware Valley ran away with the team title, 340½-222, over Tunkhannock.

Ristaino won the 100-yard breaststroke, Corcoran won the 200 freestyle and O’Connell the 100 butterfly.

The Lady Warriors used a combination of six swimmers, each participating in two, to win the three relays. Sierra Hartmann, Lily Fuchs and Anaya Ruiz were the other relay swimmers.

Berwick’s Madelyn Frey was the only Class 3A girl to win two individual events, taking the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke.

Nanticoke’s Cassandra Cabonilas, Tunkhannock’s Samantha Roerig and Hazleton Area’s Ashtyn Cartwright won the 50, 100 and 500 freestyles.

Hazleton Area finished third with 198½ points, followed by: Berwick 173, Pittston Area 135, Nanticoke 88, Wilkes-Barre Area 53, Scranton 50, Wyoming Valley West 37 and West Scranton 16.
