MOOSIC – Riverside avoided drama all the way to the bottom of the seventh inning of Tuesday’s District 2 Class 3A baseball championship game.
Then, Lake-Lehman provided plenty of suspense.
Trailing by eight runs and down to their last chance, the Black Knights managed to bring the tying run to the plate before the Vikings emerged with an 8-5 victory.
It was the second title in three years for Riverside, which won in Class 2A in 2021.
The Vikings advance to Monday’s 4 p.m. Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association state tournament opener at Bowman Field in Williamsport against District 4 champion Hughesville (19-3).
For a while, Riverside made that advancement look easy.
The Vikings scored in each of the first three innings, then doubled their lead to 8-0 with four runs in the fifth.
Patrick Higgins went 2-for-2 with a double, a run and an RBI. Jimmy Decker also drove in two runs while Jose Sosa had two hits and scored twice.
Lake-Lehman did not get a runner to third base in Nick Bohenek’s five innings or the first pitched by Casey O’Brien.
The Black Knights made things interesting with five runs scored in the bottom of the seventh when five straight batters reached base with two outs.
